Production of Wool Throughout the World
Annual production of wool worldwide is
approximately 1.3 million tons, of which almost
60% goes into clothing.
Some of the leading countries in wool production
include Australia, China, and New Zealand. The
majority of the wool from Australia comes from
the merino breed of sheep. The courser fibers of
wool are usually used for the production of
carpets, and come from breeds such as Lincoln
and Romney.
The backbone of commercial wool production in
the United States is the Rambouillet (or French
Merino). The main states where there are sheep
flocks include Texas, New Mexico, and Colorado.
In addition to commercial farmers there are
small scale farmers who produce wool for the
hand spinning market. These farmers produce a
wide selection of fleeces, as they can raise any
kind of sheep they wish.
