Uses for Wool
Wool is not just for clothing, it is
also used for upholstery, carpets, and felt.
You may not know that wool is used for the felt
to cover piano hammers and is also used to
absorb the noise and odors that are produced by
heavy machinery and stereo speakers. Wool has
been used throughout history, to line the
helmets of the ancient Greeks and to create
breastplates for the Roman legionnaires.
Wool that has bee recycled or remanufactured is
called shoddy. Shoddy is produced when wool
fabric is torn apart or cut and then respun.
Shoddy is an inferior fabric to original wool,
as the fibers have shortened during the
remanufacturing process. There are several other
types of fibers that can be added in to lengthen
the fibers, including cotton, raw wool, and wool
noil. You most commonly see then used as weft
yarns with a cotton warp.
The use of shoddy was invented in the Heavy
Woollen District of West Yorkshire. The process
was able to create a micro-economy there for
many years.
For hardy applications, such as gloves, a sturdy
wool fiber called ragg is made into a yarn and
then used to create the item.
